Ditching Plastic for Glass/Stainless Steel Drinkware & Food Storage
Switching from plastic to glass or stainless steel for baby bottles/children’s water bottles/food storage containers will help you reduce your baby’s exposure to microplastics and phthalates.
Remember, any amount of change is a good thing here so don’t put pressure on yourself to clean out the cabinets and put all your old baby things up for sale on Facebook Marketplace by Sunday (but if that’s how you like to roll, I support that too!).
The ‘What’:
What are Microplastics?
- Small fragments of any type of plastic.
What are Phthalates?
- Chemicals that are used to help a fragrance bind to a product, help brittle PVC become more flexible and malleable, and give plastic flexibility.
The ‘Why’:
- Current research suggests the effects of microplastics could include: causing immune and stress responses and giving rise to reproductive and developmental toxicity.
- Current research shows that phthalates can disrupt the endocrine system (hormone disruptions) and cause a reduction in neurocognitive development in children. Phthalates have also been linked to pregnancy loss, endometriosis, obesity, asthma, premature ovarian failure in women, and a reduction in fertility and DNA abnormalities in sperm in men.
The ‘How’:
- Slowly but surely we started doing more research on glass/stainless steel products with good reviews (4.5 stars and above if possible) that could replace what we were currently using to store baby E’s foods (and ours) and his milk.
Brands we know and love:
Baby Bottles/Breastmilk Storage:
Toddler Water Bottles:
- Hydroflask
- Lifefactory
- PlanetBox (just ordered a bottle for E to try!)
Food Storage Containers:
- Kid Stainless Steel Lunch/Snack Containers
- Glass Tupperware
- To-Go Bags (Ziploc replacements, pricey but next on our list of things to buy!)
More of my product recommendations can be found in my e-book!
As baby E grows, so will this product list. Isn’t it funny how many things a parent has to acquire to keep up with a maturing child? Make sure you come back to early blog posts to see how our product recommendations evolve and expand!
BONUS TIP:
- Keep some glass tupperware in your car so you can use your own containers when you go out to eat with the family. You’ll feel like a boss when you’re ditching the plastic at home AND at a restaurant. Plus it’ll save you some space in your trash cans because those to-go containers take up far too much precious space. We’ve got no more room for plastic-y to-go boxes in THIS trashcan!
