Choosing Organic Foods When Possible

Choosing certified organic foods whenever possible over non-organic foods will help you reduce your baby’s exposure to pesticides.

When I hear the word ‘organic’ my wallet runs and hides. But I’ve found there are plenty of ways to find organic food options that don’t break the bank or ruin your budget…so tell your frightened wallet to read this post along with you!

The ‘What’:

What are Pesticides?

  • A substance used for destroying insects or other organisms harmful to cultivated plants or animals.

The ‘Why’:

  • Studies show through food chain contamination alone, pesticides can have carcinogenic effects on the body, as well as negative effects on our endocrine system, neurological system, and reproductive system. More research indicated that cancer risk and mental health problems increase by 25–30% after exposure to pesticides. Similarly, a 50% elevated risk of leukemia, lymphoma, and brain cancer in children is linked with paternal exposure to pesticides.

The ‘How’:

  • Slowly but surely we started doing more research on how to shop Organic on a budget. Here are some tips on your hunt to put more organic foods into your fridge/pantry:

  • Meal planning helps to reduce waste and ensure the foods you may have spent a little extra on are used and stretched into more meals than just one. Buying frozen organic fruits and veggies (without added sugar/salt of course) are hidden gems when looking to save $$$ and can be purchased in bulk for larger families at stores like Costco. If you can’t find organic, you can always use a fruit/veggie wash method to remove pesticides. Check out this article on a few ways to do this!

More of my product recommendations can be found in my e-book!

BONUS TIP:

  • Why stop at fighting pesticides only found on your food? Try fighting pesticides lurking on your outdoor shoes too! The goal is to limit the pesticides that get tracked into your home and especially anywhere baby will touch (aka everywhere but definitely their nursery/room). We bought a cheap shoe rack from Target and put it at the front door to help us remember to take our outdoor shoes off before walking through the house.
  • If you can keep your shoes outside instead of bringing them in at all that’s even better…but we don’t give the large Florida spiders a chance to hide in any more places than they already do so having a shoe rack inside our front door works best for us.
